Proverbs 31:2

Let’s continue our focus on Proverbs 31 – one verse at a time. Today we will take a longer look at verse 2, and when we have read the entire chapter, will discuss its significance.

2What, my [a]son? What, son of my womb? What [shall I advise you], son of my vows and dedication to God? Continue reading

TWMO: Day 2 – A Biblical View of Womanhood, Part 2

Nancy: Well, sadly, I think so many of the younger women who are the daughters of my peers have not been spiritually mothered—in the best sense of that term—to understand the ways of God, what it means to be a woman, what it means to walk with God.

My generation has not set a great model and a great example. We have tended to be much more preoccupied with our own ways of thinking and the busyness of this life—and not to have modeled what it means to have a fruitful and right relationship with God. In so many areas—marriage and family, our views of these things, our practice of these things—we have not been the kinds of examples and the kinds of teachers I think we need to be. Continue reading

Proverbs 31:1

Nancy challenges us to read Proverbs 31 once a day over the next 31 days.

Will you accept this challenge?

In addition, I thought it would be nice to put a special focus on one verse at a time. Since it’s the first day, let’s take a longer look at verse 1, when we have read the entire chapter, and discuss its significance. Continue reading

TWMO: Day 1 – A Biblical View of Womanhood, Part 1

For the first twenty days of this make-over, we’ll journey with Nancy Leigh DeMoss through twenty select messages from her teaching “The Counter-cultural Woman: A Fresh Look at Proverbs 31.” I highly recommend the entire series!

A Biblical View of Womanhood

Where do you get your ideas about what it means to be a woman? Who has the most influence on your behavior and attitudes? Learn what the Bible has to say about being a woman!

  • We want to be women who, in every area of our lives, are controlled by the Word of God. That is what will make an impact on a world that desperately needs to see Christ incarnated and lived out through all of life.
  • As older women, we can hold up the hands of younger women. We can encourage them, and we can direct them to Scripture and help them flesh out what it looks like to be a woman after God’s own heart.
  • In Proverbs 31, we get a picture of this woman’s character, priorities, values, daily routine, marriage, and family life. All of this flows out of the fact that this woman has a reverence for God.

21 Days of Prayer for Sons: Day 21 – Humility

Day 21: Humility

Encouragement from Brooke: I chose humility as our last day’s topic because it is such an amazing posture of the heart. Scripture just seems to scream God’s favor over those who are humble in heart. James 4:10 says that if we’re humble before the Lord, He will lift us up. 1 Peter 5:6 says that if we humble ourselves under the mighty hand of God He will exalt us. Most importantly, in Psalm 149:4 we find that it is the humble who are adorned with salvation. Do you show humility before your sons? Pray and ask the Lord for specific ways you can show humility today so that when the time comes, your sons will know how to show it, too. Continue reading

21 Days of Prayer for Sons: Day 20 – Heart Change

Day 20: Heart Change

Encouragement from Brooke: The most foundational thing we can ask God for in lives of our sons is heart change. The Word says that what’s in the heart eventually comes out. I heard an illustration of this concept once from a pastor friend. He help up a Styrofoam cup with a little water inside and proceeded to ram his hand against the cup so that the water splattered everywhere. Then he asked this question: “Why did water come out of the cup?” So what do you think? Did the water come out of the cup because he rammed his hand up against it? Certainly a possible answer. But consider this: could it be that the water came out of the cup because there was water IN the cup? Continue reading
