The Story of God and Man Review & Giveaway

Have you been wanting to teach your children the valuable truths of God, but weren’t sure how?

Have you wanted to do some scripture memorization, but didn’t think your children were capable?

I have, so what a blessing it is to review this book!

How it Works and Why

The Story of God and Man uses a rhyming “Q & A” format that makes it easy for children to memorize. When you pair it with the songs available free on their website, it is a breeze to get children of any age to retain the truths of God’s Word.

How to Use

The Story of God and Man is flexible, and can be used a number of ways:

  • read a lesson with your children before bed
  • use as your Bible curriculum for the year, if you homeschool. You can schedule one section per month (there are ten sections), or two lessons per week if you school year-round
  • use in your Sunday School class, if you are a teacher
  • use for VBS, if you are a leader

No matter what denomination you are, you can use this book in your home, school, or church.

Samples

The first is a two-page spread view pdf version so you can capture the whole lesson at once. Then, there is a single-page version pdf for printing out.

This book contains beautiful two-page spreads for each of the 95 lessons. A large picture covers the left page, and on the right page is the question and answer, supporting Bible verse(s), follow-up questions, and definitions.

Lesson 1

I am going to type out the first lesson in case you can’t view the pdf samples.

Q1: Why is it that man is here?
A1: To glorify God forever with cheer.

“So whether you eat of drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” 1 Corinthians 10:31

Follow-Up Questions
What are some ways we can glorify God?
What are some ways we do not glorify God?

Definitions
glorify - to praise and thank
forever – as long as we live and after we die

See? It’s simple enough for my three year old to understand and even memorize if we repeat the lesson all week.

Topics Covered, and Songs Provided

Here is a list of the names of the ten sections:

  • The Knowledge of God
  • The Power of God
  • The Fall of Mankind
  • The Misery of Sin
  • The Gift of God’s Son
  • The Work of God’s Spirit
  • The Commandments of God
  • The Salvation of Man
  • The Pictures of Grace
  • The Model Lord’s Prayer

There is a correlating song that goes with each section that you can find here. You can listen to the song on their website, or download it and play it on your mp3 player. When your children memorize the song, they are memorizing several lesson’s worth of God’s truth!

Here is a short video showing a 3-year-old singing the first song

Teacher Guide for a More In-Depth Study

I was graciously given a pre-publication sample of their Teacher Guide, Volume 1 which covers the first 24 weeks (28 lessons).

If you are teaching a Sunday School class, leading Vacation Bible School, or even homeschooling your children, this is an essential tool.

With this teacher’s guide, you can make an impression your children won’t easily forget.

No matter how you are going to use The Story of God and Man, the Teacher Guide supplies you with several teaching formats:

  1. The Children’s Church Module (can be used for Sunday School or VBS teachers as well) shows you how you can teach within a 45-minute time-frame. An agenda is listed on the left column, and the rest of the main page contains the sections of Bible Teaching, Object Lessons, and Important Words. The Q&A for the lesson is listed on the top so you don’t lose your place. The Bible Teaching section includes the Life Application/Goal of the lesson. For Lesson #1 it reads: “Students will learn that there are many ways to praise God and that we should praise God with our thoughts, words, and actions.” Instructions to review Q&A and memory verse are listed, along with a suggestion to tell a related Bible story with pictures, puppets, role playing, or skit. Examples are given such as David dancing before the Lord in 2 Samuel 6:14-16.An example for what they include under Object Lessons are instructions to collect pictures of children from around the world and display on a world map. You ask the children to guess the mystery of what they all have in common. The answer is hat God has placed people, even children, all around the world to glorify Him.
  2. Midweek Module would be for a 20-minute time-frame. Similar instructions as the Children’s Church Module. The Object Lesson is a little different, which is nice for variety’s sake. This one suggests you show household tools and discuss their purpose. Try to cut a piece of paper with the wrong tool, and talk about how tools were designed to accomplish tasks. Remind children that we are also tools, designed by God for the purpose of good works, worship, and praise. Additional Learning Activities are included if you have more time.
  3. Home Module is for a 10-minute time-frame, with simpler instructions such as: Read Section 1 of the Story of Man at bedtime; sing song #1 along with the words; discuss the “important words” listed; give glory to God by singing and praying with a glad heart
  4. Sunday School Module for 4-10 minutes and a Worship Module for 4 minutes is also included.

Each week contains a box with Age Level Teaching Points:

  • 2-3 years: God made you! He loves you so much! He knew you would be born. How can you love Him?
  • 4-5 years: God designed a special plan for your life. Part of that plan is to praise Him! How can you do that?
  • Grades 1-3: Every moment of your day, including work and play, can bring glory to God. How can you do that?
  • Grades 4-6: God is more interested in “how” you do a job than in the job you do. Can you praise Him in all things?

Skits Included in Part 2 of the Teacher Guide

If that wasn’t enough, the second half of the Teacher Guide includes a skit for each of the 24 weeks included in Volume 1. This is a wonderful tool for larger groups or those with larger families.

Generally a lively discussion between Pink and Doc to drive home the point of the lesson, although sometimes other characters are needed as well. So if you don’t have enough children to perform the parts, you, as the parent, could use puppets if you wish. This is how I plan to use this section with my two children. A list of props is provided.
